About the Author
Artist, sculptor, illustrator, and author, Malcolm Godwin is a polymath who is, as a reviewer for the
Independent in the UK once ambiguously remarked, "...possibly our only half-decent mystic...”
Born in London, he trained as an architect, sculptor and painter. Under the name Malcolm Carder his kinetic and constructionist works have been exhibited at the Axiom Gallery, London; the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Kunsthalle, Cologne and in "The Kinetic Show" at the Hayward Gallery, London.
A large kinetic work powered by a fuel cell was commissioned for the British Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal.
His works are in the public collections of the Arts Council, the Contemporary Arts Society, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Philadelphia and the Walker Arts Centre in Minneapolis.
In 1974 he travelled to India and for the next seven years oversaw the design and publication of the books of the Indian mystic Osho, compiling "The Sound of Running Water," Osho's biography up until the year 1980.
Settling in Tuscany in 1986 with his Dutch wife Magda, they both helped found Labyrinth Publishing SA in Florence. It was in that beautiful city where Angels was conceived, being surrounded by angels in every church, on every facade and in every museum. The great culmination of angelic renaissance gave the city an almost preternatural aura as if one might fly down any moment from the church rafters or do battle with the devilish gargoyles crouched above the streets.
After a move to South West England Malcolm and Magda formed their own company ,Moonrunner Design Ltd. Here they created the artwork and design for Stephen Hawking's books "The Illustrated A Brief History of Time" and "The Universe in a Nutshell." Their own five original best sellers, "Unknown Man," "Angels: An Endangered Species," "The Lucid Dreamer," "The Holy Grail" and "Who Are You" were also written, illustrated and produced during these two periods.
